Summer 2024 Free Live History Classes

Get a bite-sized introduction to one of five popular topics and experience an engaging, interactive history class!
Two levels to choose from:
Elementary classes are for students in approximately grades 3-6.
Junior & senior high classes present the same basic material at a higher level and are designed for students in approximately grades 7 and up.

Introduction to American History
The United States is the most important country in the world today. How did that come to be? This introduction to American history will look at America’s humble beginnings as a set of British colonies and show how it grew into the most powerful and influential country in the world.

Introduction to Chinese History
China is one of the world’s most important countries. Indeed, it seems like almost everything is “Made in China.” This introduction will show how, after thousands of years of being the “Middle Kingdom” of East Asia, China has adapted to the modern world.

Introduction to Europe and Russia
Europe and Russia are again at war! Will it ever stop? This introduction to European history will show how Europe’s different nations have struggled to live in peace, and why they formed the European Union—but also why Russia is on the outside to this day.

Introduction to Ancient Greece and Rome
Why is the world the way it is? Neither America, nor Europe, nor much of the rest of the world would be the way it is without relying on the amazing cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. This class will introduce students to these ancient cultures that still matter so much today.

Introduction to Ancient Egypt
When we think about the ancient world, little is more mysterious and fascinating than ancient Egypt. Who were the pyramid builders? How did they live, and why did they disappear? This introduction will answer students’ basic questions about Egypt and help them see how it fits in world history.

Meet the Teacher
Scott Powell is a historian and teacher who has been teaching homeschooled students online for nearly 20 years (as “History at Our House”). He is the author of three books including “The 4-Hour Historian”, “The History of Now”, and the upcoming “The History of Tomorrow”. His present-centric approach was developed from the conviction that history is an essential subject that is vital for anyone who wants to live a fully engaged life and make sense of the world they live in.
Class Details:
- Classes are held on Zoom. You will receive a link to join the class a day or two before the event.
- Please plan join a few minutes early so you can test your equipment and troubleshoot any problems.
- Classes are interactive and students are invited to raise their hands to answer or ask questions during class.
- Cameras will be turned off during class for your student’s privacy.
